The Mercedes-Benz Committee for Social Contribution has awarded 50 promising youth sports talents with scholarships totalling KRW 150 million from the Mercedes-Benz GIVE 'N DREAM programme to nurture future talent from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Mercedes-Benz Social Contribution Committee held a 'Give & Dream' scholarship handover ceremony on the 14th, attended by scholarship recipient Bang Go-eun, an aikido athlete representing Seongnam City, Chairman of the Mercedes-Benz Social Contribution Committee Matthias Weitl, Chairman of the Children and Future Foundation Lee Hoon-kyu, and Director of the Woori Korean Parent and Family Support Centre Lee Ji-woo.
Bango-eun, who attended the ceremony, is a fifth-grader, the youngest of the Give & Dream scholars, and is an up-and-coming aikido athlete who won first place in three self-defence events at the Gyeonggi-do National Team Trials in March, and a gold medal in the elementary school senior self-defence event at the Gyeonggi-do Governor's Aikido Competition in May.
The 2024 Give & Dream Scholarships will be awarded to 50 promising athletes in various sports, including taekwondo, football, baseball, tennis, golf, badminton and swimming, who come from low-income families or other low-income groups. The scholarships will be worth up to KRW3 million for one year, and will be used for competitions, training, equipment purchases, injury treatment, and other related expenses.
"We are very pleased to be able to help young sports talents realise their full potential through the Give & Dream Scholarship," said Matthias Weitl, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "We want to encourage and support them to pursue their dreams, even in difficult circumstances.
'Give & Dream' is part of Mercedes-Benz GIVE, a social contribution programme run by the Mercedes-Benz Social Contribution Committee to spread a culture of giving through sport, which has been supporting underprivileged children and youth sports talents since 2020, and has provided scholarships totalling KRW 750 million to 147 athletes since its inception.
