Nürburgring lap time cut by '8.7 seconds', Porsche 911 Hybrid nears unveiling

Porsche is set to unveil the first 911 sports car with hybrid drive. The new performance-oriented 911 with Hybrid Drive is ready for series production following an extensive development and testing programme.

"For the first time in the brand's 61-year history, the iconic 911 is available with a hybrid drive system, making it a road-going car," said Frank Moser, Vice President of the 911 and 718 lines. "The innovative performance hybrid makes it even more dynamic."

"We have thoroughly tested the car in all conditions around the world," he added. "The final phase of testing in Dubai saw development and testing in extreme conditions, from freezing cold to scorching heat. "The new 911 Hybrid has been subjected to challenging driving conditions such as mountainous terrain, congested city traffic and other driving environments where high revs and torque generate a lot of heat in the drivetrain, and our engineers and test drivers have completed more than five million test kilometres in total.

Testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife has traditionally been an important symbol of Porsche's development of the 911. During the performance tests, Porsche Brand Ambassador Jörg Bergmeister recorded a lap time of 7 minutes 16.934 seconds, 8.7 seconds faster than the previous model. "The new 911 is considerably quicker on the track," Bergmeister said, "thanks to more grip, more power and the immediate response of the performance hybrid." In addition to standard tyres, the test car was fitted with an aero kit including a fixed rear wing that provides increased downforce at high speeds.
