The BMW 5 Series has been named 'World Luxury Car 2024' by the prestigious World Car Awards.
The World Car Awards are judged annually by more than 100 international judges who test drive and evaluate the newest cars on the global market and then vote to select the Car of the Year in six categories. This year's judging process involved more than 100 automotive journalists from 30 countries.
The 5 Series was named World Luxury Car 2024 after competing against 13 other new cars in the luxury segment. The judges praised the 5 Series for the powerful performance of its electrified internal combustion engine and all-electric drive system, as well as its long-distance comfort and a range of digital innovations.

The progressive nature of the new 5 Series is evident in its powertrain technology, innovative digital services, elegant and sporty design, spacious cabin, comfort-optimised quietness and luxurious interior ambience. Advanced assistance systems such as Highway Driving Assist and Vision Assist with Active Lane Change Assist complement the 5 Series' outstanding long-distance driving capabilities.
Equipped with BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with all its extended functions, the BMW i5 is set up from the ground up to engage the driver and the car through touch controls and natural dialogue. Occupants can watch a variety of video streams via the control display while stationary (e.g. when charging the high-voltage battery) and enjoy new forms of in-car gaming.
Fully integrated into the 5 Series model line-up, the i5 offers emission-free driving pleasure. The dynamic driving performance and efficiency of the i5 is based on the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology, which consists of a highly integrated drive unit and an extremely energy-dense high-voltage battery.
An intelligent combination of the latest adaptive regenerative braking, heat pump technology for cabin heating and cooling, an all-electric drive system and a high-voltage battery has also been used to achieve a long single-charge range of up to 582 kilometres on the WLTP. The battery can be filled at a rate of up to 22 kilowatts for a slow charge and up to 205 kilowatts for a fast charge. On a quick charge, the range can be quickly increased to 156 kilometres in just 10 minutes.
The 5 Series' internal combustion engine range has also been electrified. Thanks to a drivetrain architecture that was designed from the outset to be flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of technologies, the 5 Series saloon line-up is the first to feature a purely electric model alongside plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel engines. The new modular internal combustion engines from the BMW Group's Effective Dynamics engines all feature the latest 48-volt mild hybrid technology.
The World Car Awards were launched 20 years ago in 2004 to recognise outstanding innovations and new products in the global automotive market, in addition to national and regional awards, and this year a total of six categories were awarded, including an overall prize. BMW has won eight World Car Awards over the years. One of these is the BMW 7 Series, which was named World Luxury Car in 2016. In 2018, the BMW M5 took the title of World Performance Car.
