GM has achieved a dominant share of the U.S. compact SUV market in the first quarter of 2024, with nearly 401 TP3T. This was driven by the phenomenally popular Chevrolet Trax crossover and Trailblazer, which ranked among the top three best-selling small SUVs in the U.S. in Q1, once again demonstrating their quality and affordability in global markets.
According to J.D. Power's Power Information Network (PIN), GM had a 39.51 TP3T share of the total U.S. compact SUV market in the first quarter of this year, the highest among manufacturers. Four in 10 U.S. consumers buying a compact SUV chose a GM model.
In the first quarter, the Trax crossover and Trailblazer dominated the U.S. small SUV market with 18.61 TP3T and 11.51 TP3T of share, respectively, making them the top three small SUV sellers. When combined with sales of derivative models sold under GM brands, the two models accounted for nearly 401 TP3T of all U.S. small SUV sales in the first quarter.
The Trax crossover in particular has emerged as the centrepiece of the US small SUV market surge, with market share up 151 TP3T from the first quarter of last year. The Trax crossover has been such a megahit that in February, it overtook the Subaru Crosstrek to become the best-selling small SUV in the U.S. small SUV market for the first time ever.
GM was the best-selling automaker in the U.S. market in the first quarter, selling a total of 594,233 vehicles, driven by popular models such as the Trax crossover and Trailblazer.
The Chevrolet Trax crossover and Trailblazer, including its derivatives, produced and exported by GM Korea, have continued their remarkable sales streak in the domestic market. The Trax crossover has been so popular that it has never missed the top spot in monthly sales in the compact CUV segment since its introduction in Korea, and it leads the entire crossover market with an impressive sales share of approximately 731 TP3T last year.
In addition, the Trax crossover and Trailblazer are on track to become the No. 1 and No. 2 automotive exports in the world, with 216,833 and 214,048 units sold to overseas markets in 2023, respectively, according to the Korea Automotive Mobility Industry Association (KAMA). The Trax crossover, in particular, has shown a tremendous sales pace, ranking as the No. 1 overall exporter last year in less than a year in the export market, even though shipments began in earnest in March last year.
The outstanding quality and market acceptance of the TRAX crossover and Trailblazer is evidenced by the many awards they have received from respected national and international automotive evaluators and media. Car and Driver named the Trax crossover to its annual list of the 10 Best Trucks and SUVs for 2024, which recognises the best trucks and SUVs based on value and driving performance.
In addition, the ALG Residual Value Awards 2024 ranked the Trax crossover as the best residual value model in the Micro SUV segment, and the Initial Quality Study (IQS) ranked the Buick Encore GX, a sibling model that shares the same powertrain and platform as the Trailblazer, as the No. 1 model for quality.
Meanwhile, Chevrolet launched the 2025 Trax crossover last month with special edition models and new connectivity services. Alongside the existing LS, RS, and ACTIV trims, a new REDLINE trim with bold red accents on the exterior and interior has been added, while ACTIV and RS trims will be equipped with the Onstar service, which provides remote control (ignition, door locks, horn & hazard lights), vehicle status information (trip history, tyre pressure, fuel level, oil life, fuel economy), and vehicle diagnostics via a mobile app.
