Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the world premiere of the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, the first pure electric version of the G-Class. It combines iconic elements inherited from the outgoing G-Class, such as the angular exterior design, with a powerful electric powertrain.
The body, which retains the same ladder frame structure, has been improved and reinforced to accommodate the electric drive unit. A 116-kilowatt-hour (kWh) high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which is integrated into the frame and lowers the car's centre of gravity, provides a range of up to 473 kilometres on the WLTP. In addition to the conventional independent double-wishbone front suspension, a new rigid rear axle combination has been developed.
Four individually controlled electric motors located close to the wheels deliver a peak power output of 588 hp, while 'LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction' delivers a unique driving experience and differentiating features.
This includes G-TURN, which turns the car almost in place on uneven or unpaved surfaces, G-STEERING, which significantly reduces the turning radius when driving off-road, and three-stage Intelligent Off-Road Crawl Cruise Control, which maintains optimal propulsion while the driver focuses on dealing with the terrain. It is also stable on slopes of up to 35°.
In addition, the new G-Class has a maximum load capacity of 850 mm, which is 150 mm deeper than the previous model, increased propulsion with a low-range off-road gear system, and a differential lock function based on 'intelligent torque vectoring'. It also offers a unique acoustic experience with 'G-Roar', which combines the original G-Class driving sound with a range of 'event' sounds.
The exterior of the new electrified G-Class continues the existing family look. The optional black-panelled radiator grille completes the electric character, while the slightly raised bonnet, the "air curtains" in the rear wheel arch flares and the design box at the rear give the new G-Class a distinctly electric feel. The new A-pillar cladding and spoiler lip on the roof also help to achieve optimum aerodynamics.
The MBUX infotainment system, multifunction steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather and ambient lighting are standard. Optional features include KEYLESS-GO, climate-controlled cup holders, a Burmester® 3D surround sound system and a 'transparent bonnet'. Redesigned off-road controls and an off-road cockpit are also available as options to enhance the off-road experience. A limited edition 'EDITION ONE' model with even more standard equipment and exclusive design elements is also available.
You can also apply Manupacture to make your car even more personalised. More than a million colour and material combinations are available, including paint colours, spare wheel rings, seat graphics, stitching and instrument cluster decorations. It will be available in the Korean market later this year.
